DAY 1

COLOMBO AIRPORT – PINNAWALA – DAMBULLA

 

Colombo | Sri Lanka Capital

 

  • Flight from your country to Colombo
  • Arrival at Colombo International Airport where you will meet a representative of our local agency and  you will be taken to your hotel

 

PINNAWALA

  • Around 8.30 a.m. you will head to Pinnawala  and visit the elephant orphanage; you’ll see the baby elephants getting fed and having their bath in the river
DAMBULLA
  • Afternoon: drive towards Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle to visit the Golden Temple in Dambulla, a World Heritage Site since 1991
  • Golden statues and mural paintings with vibrant colours adorn this impressive site
  • You will then leave for Sigiriya where you’ll spend the rest of the day at the hotel

DAY 2

SIGIRIYA – POLONNARUWA

 

SIGIRIYA

  • Around 8 a.m.: Climb the Sigiriya’s Lion Rock, the famous Sri Lankan landmark
  • The vertiginous ascent will take you to the fortress, which overlooks the surrounding valley from a 370-meter height
  • You will then enjoy a warm and friendly welcome when you have lunch in a private home

 

POLONNARUWA

  • After lunch: Polonnaruwa archaeological site (World Heritage Site since 1982)

This ancient city was also the capital of Sri Lanka for two centuries and you’ll discover it on a mountain bike! You can cycle around the 15 km2 site for two to three hours and see ancient monuments such as the former Royal Palace, the audience hall or the statue of King Parakramabahu

  • After this great excursion you will meet a local family who will welcome you into their home and give you an insight into Sri Lankan culture

DAY 3

MATALE – KANDY

 

  • Morning: drive to Kandy
  • On the way to Kandy you will stop in Matale to visit the spice garden
  • You will then carry on towards Kandy and go straight to the hotel on arrival

 

KANDY

  • Visit the famous Temple of the Tooth; this temple contains the Relic of the Tooth of Buddha, which Sri Lankans come to venerate
  • Late afternoon: you will see a traditional dance performance and attend the evening ceremony at the celebrated Temple of the Tooth

DAY 4

PERADENIYA – KANDY

 

PERADENIYA

  • Morning; visit of the exceptional Peradeniya Botanic Gardens. A former royal park, today they remain the largest gardens in Sri Lanka.
  • Sights include a gorgeous orchid collection and a prestigious avenue of palms planted in 1950

 

KANDY

  • The afternoon will be free
  • You can go shopping or relax with a nice Ayurvedic massage !

DAY 5

MAUSSAWA

 

  • After breakfast; you will drive across the “green gold” hills to go to Maussawa
  • On the way to reach Maussawa you will discover an unspoilt haven of Sri Lankan biodiversity
  • You can meet the villagers and discover the rice paddies

DAY 6

NUWARA ELIYA – ELLA

 

NUWARA ELIYA

  • Morning; you will leave for Nuwara Eliya, appropriately nicknamed “Little England” since the hill town was a favourite among English colonists
  • On the way you will visit a tea plantation and a tea factory
  • You can then stroll around the lovely town of Nuwara Eliya

 

ELLA

  • Early afternoon; you will board on a local train travelling through a spectacular setting of verdant tea plantations until you reach Ohiya, where a driver will be expecting you to take you to Ella
  • Afternoon; you will climb Little Adam’s Peak, surrounded by tea-plantations (45 min)
  • Evening; you will then go back down to your hotel

DAY 7

BUDURUWAGALA – YALA

 

BUDURUWAGALA

  • Morning; drive to Yala
  • On the way;  stop in Buduruwagala to see the largest statue of Buddha in the country, a very impressive sight!
  • You will then stop at an agricultural estate to enjoy a typical local lunch with lots of different flavours

 

YALA

  • End of the day; you will reach Yala National Park and go on a safari to see elephants as well as leopards, crocodiles, monkeys and other wildlife

Dinner and night at the 3-star Kirinda Beach Resort (or similar)

DAY 8

GALLE – BALAPITIYA

GALLE
  • Morning; drive to Galle, a city imbued with colonial charm
  • On arrival you will notice the city’s ramparts as well as the impressive Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest of its kind in the world

You can visit former Dutch colonial buildings such as;

  • Government House
  • The “Groote Kerk” (“Great Church” in Dutch) and above all the oldest hotel in Sri Lanka
  • The New Oriental Hotel, where you can have tea in the charming open-terrace conservatory

 

BALAPITIYA

  • Evening; you will then go to a monastery in Balapitiya where you’ll spend the rest of the day and stay overnight

Dinner and night at the monastery with a meditation session with a Buddhist monk

DAY 9

COLOMBO

 

  • Morning; drive to Colombo
  • You’ll be taken on a guided tour of Colombo, the economic capital of Sri Lanka

Visit;

  • The impressive Buddhist temple of Gangaramaya, which presents an impressive mix of Sinhalese
  • Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture
  • Captain’s Garden Hindu Temple
  • The Wolvendaal Dutch Church
  • The Town Hall

Dinner and night at the 4-star Ramada Katunayake (or similar).

DAY 10

LAST DAY – COLOMBO AIRPORT

 

  • This is the last day of your tour
  • You will be taken to the airport and fly home
